Member Bio
Fabio Giglietto PhD, is Associate Professor at the Department of Communication Sciences, Humanities and International Studies at the University of Urbino Carlo Bo, where he also teaches Internet Studies. His main research interests are theory of information, communication, and society with a specific focus on the relationships between social systems, media and digital technologies. Thanks to a grant awarded by the Social Science Research Council and unprecedented data and tools provided by Social Science One and Facebook, he is currently leading a team studying the impact of social media on recent Italian elections. On these topics, he has published extensively in journals such as the Journal of Communication, Information, Communication & Society, the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Social Media + Society, and Social Science Computer Review.
In 2015 he was awarded the Best Paper Social Science Track for “To be or not to be Charlie: Twitter hashtags as a discourse and counter-discourse in the aftermath of the 2015 Charlie Hebdo shooting in France,” presented during the International World Wide Web Conference workshop Making Sense of Microposts.
In 2017 he was the recipient of a grant funded by the Information Program of the Open Society Foundation for a study titled "Mapping Italian News Media Political Coverage in the Lead-up of 2018 General Election" (https://elezioni2018.news/).

Since 2010, he has been a member of the board of the Research Committee 51 on Sociocybernetics of the International Sociological Association. He is also a member of the International Communication Association, the Association of Internet Researchers, and the Italian Association of Political Communication. Since 2014 he has been the editor of the Journal of Sociocybernetics (ISSN 1607-86667).
