AoIR 2026 Access Grant

Application Deadline: 10 July 2026

AoIR seeks to foster inclusivity and diversity within our membership and throughout Association activities such as our annual conference. We are committed to supporting a wide range of identities and social, cultural, and political needs in the development and planning of Association activities.

New for 2026, the AoIR Access Grants support conference participation by scholars who experience barriers or biases to participation, for example threats to academic freedom, financial hardship, oppression, precarity, and other forms of exclusion, including membership in underrepresented groups.

Unlike the Kelly Quinn Travel Scholarship, the Access Grant is open to scholars at any career stage and is not limited to financial need. Early-career scholars whose main barrier is lack of funding should apply to the Kelly Quinn Travel Scholarship instead. Please apply to only one of the two.

We offer

  • up to 5 Access Grants of up to 2,000 USD each, and
  • up to 5 Access Grants of 500 USD each.

The grants reimburse travel or accommodation costs.

Conditions

  • Applicants must be AoIR members (or be ready to become AoIR members). Information on becoming a member is at members.aoir.org.
  • Applicants must have their paper, panel, roundtable, fishbowl, or experimental session accepted for AoIR 2026 in Mexico City.
Applicants will need to identify the barriers and limitations affecting their ability to attend. Because resources are limited, applicants must clearly indicate whether they are able to co-fund their participation should they receive a grant that covers some of their expenses.

Application Deadline: 10 July 2026

All applications must be submitted via this form: https://forms.gle/47pMqJu4m5KUUkgc8. Late submissions cannot be considered. Responses will be sent before the 1 August early bird conference registration deadline.

Preparing your application

  • Proof of acceptance.
  • Motivational letter (up to 800 words). Identify the barriers affecting your ability to attend. You may, for example, explain the exceptional circumstances you are in, or how your contribution to the AoIR conference brings a distinctive, underrepresented perspective. Within your letter, please address:
    • What involvement have you had with AoIR so far, and how will the grant help you continue your journey with AoIR? You may want to consider which activities or (pre-)conferences you have been part of and what contribution you made. (up to 300 words)
    • What contribution will receiving this grant allow you to make to AoIR? You may want to consider what you hope to become involved in at the conference, how you could help make AoIR more inclusive or become involved in the organisation, and what your input might look like. (up to 300 words)

Evaluation criteria

Applications are reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Priority will be given to applications that demonstrate:

  • commitment and contribution to AoIR's organisation and community, and
  • applicants from countries or regions that have been less involved in AoIR previously.

Application Deadline: 10 July 2026

Award details

AoIR is partnering with an international travel agency to coordinate travel or accommodations for all award recipients.

  • The agency will arrange flights or lodging, based on the information provided by each awardee.
  • They will also support visa applications by providing documentation and guidance.
  • Visa application fees (if applicable) may be reimbursed upon submission of receipts after the conference.
  • Reimbursements will be made via Bill.com, Wise.com, or PayPal.

To facilitate travel planning, AoIR will share the necessary awardee information with the travel agency. This information will be used exclusively to coordinate your travel and lodging arrangements. All awardees will receive detailed instructions on how to communicate with the travel agency and begin the planning process.

If unforeseen circumstances prevent your attendance after arrangements have been made, AoIR and the agency will work with you to manage cancellations or changes. Supporting documentation may be required.
